Great News! Welcome Janna and Lindsay!

Welcome Janna and Lindsay

as Co-Contributors to our Blog!

I am so happy to announce that BBB  is now going to be a Trio! My close friends Janna and Lindsay are joining BBB to help provide more variety to our posts. Over the past few months, we’ve  discovered that we share the same interests in indie books and music and have very interesting points of view on a myriad of subjects.  It’s going to be such a wonderful and exciting change!  Watch out for more reviews, author spotlights, book trailers, cover reveals and interviews as well as career and fashion tidbits!

Meet Lindsay:

I am not a writer, just a reader. I am a lover of love and indie authors. I don’t get overly excited about wrong comma placement or fragmented sentences, because I can barely construct one myself. I just know what makes me happy when I read and like to share when I find a good book!

I like a good love story, from the sweet to the scandalous, if there is a happily ever after in it, I am all over it.

And here’s Janna:

I’m a writer, a reader,  a devoted music lover and a coffee addict.  I am an avid Indie author supporter and definitely a book nerd.  I am organizing my first book signing event scheduled for 2014 and look forward to seeing you all there!

Binds by Rebecca Espinoza

4.5 Stars!

Ophelia Brands is in a bind and she doesn’t even know it. Literally. Trapped in a loveless marriage and in search of her self- identity, she is kidnapped one day by a revolutionary group that seems to think they have all her answers.  First she finds out she is a Mage. Next, she herself is under a Bind imposed on her by her husband to curtail her powers.  Sad and alone since the day her mother was murdered, Ophelia doesn’t know what to think of these new revelations.  When given the choice of fighting for her people or returning to her old life, Ophelia knows that she will never ever give the second option a single thought. With her new-found people as well as the attention of two very protective and attractive rebels – Reece and Spencer, Ophelia must decide what her future will be.  This means going up against the most powerful Oberon who is also her father in law. As Ophelia learns more and more about her husband and the evil deeds of Oberon, she knows that she must stay with this group and help fight for the rights of the Mages.

This book was such a wonderful and surprising read for me. I have never read such a unique and unusual story.  Rebecca Espinoza’s writing is so eloquent that there was never a point of confusion for me despite the many levels present in the story. Her descriptions are vivid enough that her characters become realistic and compelling.  Rebecca Espinoza brilliantly wove many allusions to a foreboding that kept me engaged throughout the book. I wanted to find out who Reece and Spencer really are. Why did they go through all the trouble to watch her two years before deciding that it was time to take her? Were the Binds imposed on Ophelia the real reasons behind her acceptance of the falsehoods in her life or was she blinded by being too focused on her unhappy existence? Either way, the causes championed by her new “friends” have given her the inspiration and strength to revert to the woman she once was, with or without her magical powers. At the end of the book there is such an unexpected twist that makes me want to beg the author to hurry up and publish Book 2.

Binds is a story about fairies and magic and supernatural powers.  It is a story about the inherent presence of greed and the love for power in human nature . But most of all, it is a story about the love of a child for her mother, the absolute capacity of the heart to do good and the ever-present search for justice and equality among all of existence, humans and non humans alike. Rebecca Espinoza has done a fantastic job of combining mystery with magic and even a touch of romance. I can’t wait to read more from this refreshingly exceptional new author.

Reckless Abandon by Andrea Randall

Book Excerpt:

Before he can respond, the bartender takes the stage and announces Bo. My fingers tingle and I feel slightly dizzy. I notice that Rae is staring at me and am thankful that Regan isn’t. I tilt my chin to the stage to somehow reassure her that everything’s fine. Bo comes out wearing black jeans and a green t-shirt. The green t-shirt he told me reminded him of my eyes. I swallow hard as he sits on the stool and, without saying a word, starts strumming.

Every feeling from the first night I heard him play flies through me like a drunken seagull. I take several deep breaths as he makes his way through his original work, praying that what I’m feeling isn’t regret. The strings, his fingers, the warm bourbon tone kissing the microphone; they’re all lulling me into his presence, his being.

4.5 Stars

When Ten Days of Perfect ends, Ember is distraught about finding out Bo’s involvement in an incident that happened earlier on in the story. She turns to Adrian for comfort and tries to convince herself that what she had with Bo was merely a passing fling. She tries to take stock of her feelings and navigates through her rekindled relationship with Adrian while working for the same not for profit chaired by Bo. This doesn’t work so well – it doesn’t take much for her to realize that she is still in love with him. Their relationship takes many twists and turns as they both try to move on from each other. And then it happens: an unimaginable tragedy that leaves them reeling from pain, anger and confusion. Bo and Ember must learn how to endure their heartbreak whether separately or as a couple.

I’m going to mention up front that this has been one of the best books I have read in 2013 (with TLS of course). I read this book first as a Beta for Andrea and then twice more as the versions were being finalized and finally published. The emotions evoked in me by her writing have not changed between the first and last times I have read this book. Reckless Abandon is Andrea Randall’s break out work. There is so much more feeling, intensity, pain and love that have been rolled up into such a wonderful conclusion to Ten Days of Perfect.

There are a host of reasons for the effect that this book had on me. Andrea Randall has taken the characters to a whole new level.  It is a coming of age story in which the characters are catapulted into the depths of despair as we wait with bated breath to see how they survive. Bo and Ember cease to become perfect in the reader’s eyes. They are flawed and fallible, they thrash and flinch from their grief, they react in undignified ways. The cast of characters from Book 1 are back, and they each provide different layers to Bo and Ember’s story.  The author also takes her time to develop each character’s personal healing process and the consequences of each one’s actions. Oftentimes, misfortunes can either make or break a couple and Bo and Ember are not immune to the outcome that this heartbreak has on their bond.  Their agony is so heart wrenching and at times hard to swallow, but it gave them substance and integrity. It made them feel real in my eyes.  Andrea Randall also has an extreme talent for writing songs and poetry. The story is so full of these sweet words and verses one can’t help but feel these expressions as if they are leaping out of the book and into your heart. And the romantic scenes between Bo and Ember – they are electrifying, sizzling, achingly tender and romantic.   Andrea Randall’s words drown you with a sorrow so intense, it makes you fear that each time they are together may be their last.

As I stood with a  group of people getting ready to go to dinner the night before the Chicago Author Event last September, I realized I was standing right next to Andrea Randall. I saw a shy, quiet lady who had just published her first book. I turned to her and said, “hey, you’re Andrea Randall. I loved Ten Days of Perfect and Bo.” She has called me her First Bo Fan ever since. And she might still be shy (although not after you get to know her) but she is certainly no longer a new  and emerging author. Andrea Randall has come into her own. With her words, with her characters and with her writing. Congratulations, Andrea Randall!

About the Author:

I started writing poetry long before writing fiction. I firmly believe Poetry is a solid foundation for all other forms of writing. It taught me that a single word can make or break the world.

I write fiction because my characters have a story and they want me to tell it.

I hope you enjoy the pieces of my soul that I share with you.

There’s a storm brewing at Black Cat Records and lead singer Marcus Anthony and guitarist Avery Jones are at the center of it.

Brutal Strength is leaving Vancouver and heading out on a big stadium tour with reprobate rockers from Tempest as their opening act.

Avery is forced to deal with a troubling figure from her past while being pursued by Tempest’s tatted bad boy, Bryan ‘Bullet’ Jackson.

Meanwhile, Marcus must battle his own internal demons as well as this rival for Avery’s affection.

Can Avery and Marcus keep their fairy tale happily ever after together when the prevailing winds of the real world are against them?

Love Resolution is the third book in the Black Cat Records series.

**A new adult contemporary novel with mature subject matter**

About the Author:

Michelle Mankin is a young/new adult romance writer as well as a self-proclaimed giant…inside her own mind.

For many years, she toiled in the insurance industry as an underwriter. Somehow, the boredom didn’t kill her, and the hours of looking at facts and figures provided ample time for her mind to wander.

Love Evolution, Love Revolution, and the latest novel, Love Resolution are rock ‘n roll romances. The first is based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the second on Much Ado About Nothing, and the third on The Tempest. The first three books in the Black Cat Records series combine the plot underpinnings of the famous playwright with the drama, excitement, and indisputable sexiness of the rock ‘n roll industry.

When she is not putting her daydreams down on paper, you can find Michelle traveling the world with her family. Sometimes for real and sometimes just for pretend as she takes the children to school and back.

Book Review:  Hunted by Lorenz Font

Book Excerpt:

“There really isn’t a second scenario, we’re dead set and conceptually right about the first one.” Pritchard chuckled. Harrow hissed under his breath, unable to control his hunger any longer. “You need to feed. I know Tor rudely interrupted your dinner. Intel confirms that needle in your pocket, meant you’re not advocating the spread of the disease, am I right?”

Harrow shuddered before nodding. His could feel his strength fading and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. This human, in all of his infinite wisdom, should give him his neck and be done with.

“I know what you’re thinking Harrow,” Pritchard laughed without humor. “I’m not the enemy here, or your dinner. I will take you to a cell for now, where you will be fed donated blood until we find a cure for that ailment.  Neither of you are prisoners here, but until we are certain that you’re not a threat to us humans, you will not be allowed to move around freely.”

Pritchard rose to his feet. “Follow me,” he told Harrow.

“What about these damn cuffs on our leg, we’re not animals you know.” Tor said and his voice thundered through the room.  He was already up on his feet and facing off with Lambert, who was sporting a push dagger, notably of Dangeran material.

“They are trackers, in case you are out there,” Lambert motioned with his hand. “We will know how to find you.”

“Just like we’re dogs, right?” Tor said distastefully.

“Yes, but very special dogs,” Lambert said, taunting as he grabbed Tor’s elbow and shoved him forward to follow Pritchard and Harrow.  They were already walking down the long corridor that eventually led them to a windowless suite. The furnishings were top-rated, lavish to be exact. There were two king-sized beds, a state of the art sound system sitting next to a giant television, expensive looking art adorned the wall, and plush carpeting to boot.

4 Stars!

Harrow Gates is living with a disease that has caused him to go on the run. He is hunted by both vampires and humans alike for fear that he may infect many more. Jordan (Just Jordan) is on the run as well. She is seeking revenge from the vampire who killed her parents and transformed her into one of them.  Little does Harrow know that he is being tracked by Pritchard Tack, a well known billionaire in desperate need of Harrow’s help.  When Harrow and Jordan learn about Pritchard’s mission, they commit to helping him find a cure for the other infected vampires including Pritchard’s daughter, Allison.  Harrow and Jordan also help to protect others from the leaders of the Vampire Council, Demetrius and Goran who feast on humans and are hell bent on procreating their lineage.  And although Harrow knows that he can never be close to Jordan without the risk of infecting her with his disease, he has hopelessly fallen in love with her.

This book was such a pleasant surprise for me, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did! First off, the main character, Harrow is a flawless depiction of a strong, valiant, intelligent and principled hero. The fact that he is troubled only helped contribute to the enigmatic  effect that he has on the story.  Lorenz Font has brilliantly created  a vampire you would love to love. Add in a headstrong but romantic heroine as well as a wonderful cast of characters from Pritchard and Allison to Tor and Cyrus, Lambert and Rohnert.  Vampires and humans all coexisting together with the same noble goals.  The banter between them was very entertaining and the premise of the story kept me engaged until the very end.

Lorenz Font’s book highlighted the essentiality of the human soul and the healing power of love. Whether it be the love of a father, of a brother, of a sister, friend or lover. Love can change things, can redeem hurt, can soften one’s heart.  Pritchard Tack thought that he had to work hard to convince Harrow to stay at his facility and help find a cure for Allison and the others. In the end, it was Pritchard who really saved Harrow and Jordan from living a life of anger and regret. For in each other, they found that the past can only help to strengthen their future. Leave it to me to put a romantic spin on a vampire story. Mission accomplished.

About the Author:  Meet Lorenz Font

Lorenz Font discovered her love of writing after reading a celebrated novel that inspired one idea after another. Hunted, the first book of The Gates Legacy trilogy, is her debut novel. Written in forty-five days, the grueling writing schedule was a personal challenge, even though she thought it was madness at first.

She enjoys dabbling in different genres with an intense focus on angst and the redemption of flawed characters. Her fascination with romantic twists is a mainstay in all her stories.

She currently lives in California with her husband, children, and two demanding dogs. Lorenz spends most of her free time writing while also working as a Business Office Manager for a skilled-rehabilitation hospital.
