College.

Parties, sororities and getting drunk.

Oh, yeah. And learning.

This may be true for most college students, but not for Leah Bennett.  College life for her includes studying, working, and excelling in school.  When it comes to the social ladder, Leah is at the bottom.  Popular girls, hot guys and star athletes are of no importance to her, except for one.

Matthew Jacobs.

Matt is the starting wide receiver at SUNY Cortland, the most wanted guy on campus and Leah’s best friend.  Although Leah’s feelings toward Matt run deeper than just a friendship, it is something she would never let be heard because the odds of someone like Matthew Jacobs going for someone like Leah Bennett are slim to none.

When Matt starts showing an interest in Leah that goes beyond friendship, she is dumbfounded and doesn’t believe it is possible – until one weekend that changes everything.

Will Matt and Leah’s popularity status get in the way of having a chance at a real relationship?

Or does status mean nothing when it comes to true love?

3.5 stars

When Matthew Jacobs meets Leah Bennett, he takes an instant interest in her quirky, outspoken ways and she can’t believe he’s even speaking to her.  The reason for her disbelief is evident: he is an all star athlete and she is an artistic nerd.  When their friendship takes off, Leah thinks that all she is to Matt is an online friend. All this time, Matt is showing signs of falling for her. Can Leah accept the truth about Matt’s feelings or will her insecurities ruin what’s in store for them?

Waiting on Forever is Ashley Wilcox’ best book yet. It’s fun and lighthearted, a straight no drama story about college life and falling in love. Leah’s thoughts are unabashed and direct. She makes no qualms about her feelings for Matt and believes that his attention towards her is unrealistic. Matt on the other hand is sweet and possessive, and makes sure to let Leah know that he is falling for her.  It’s an easy and enjoyable read. Not much drama or angst but an enjoyable few hours nonetheless. Their chemistry is steamy and the love that they find is real and permanent. Once Leah and Matt find each other, they work towards attaining a forever together.  There is something to be said about a book as unpretentious as this. It’s a welcome respite because it knows what it wants and it knows how it needs to end. Congratulations Ashley Wilcox!

It’s the beginning of her new life . . .

Twenty-three year old Amy Miller has been responsible for her little brother ever since their dad dropped dead and their mom took off six years ago. Now that her brother is eighteen, Amy’s ready to fulfill her dream of opening her own stationary store.

But the past has a way of sneaking up on you . . .

Then an old friend comes back to town–Amy’s high school boyfriend, Hunter Morgan, to be exact. The same guy who dropped her a week before prom, leaving her a sobbing mess in a sequined Jovani dress. The same gorgeous man who now wants Amy back and won’t take no for an answer.

And the future has a way of getting complicated . . .

But when Amy meets Ryan Anderson, an irresistible Brit and powerful businessman tied to Hunter’s company, their instant attraction and chemistry awakens a passion in her she never knew existed. Ryan is dangerous and sexy, pulling her deeper into a new world of desire where anything goes, while Hunter is determined to use all his old tricks to posses her again—body and soul. Soon Amy is torn between her incredible first love and the most desirable man she has ever known, but is she just a pawn in a wicked game? And if she surrenders herself to passion, will she be left a loser in love all over again?

*Ages 17 plus, due to sexual situations and mature content*

Excerpt:

“Penny for your thoughts,” I said, surprising myself.  I never say things like that, but he looked so serious, sitting there in the midst of the party, pensive and alone. I was determined to lighten his mood, though maybe the four wine coolers had something to do with it.   I smiled and moved closer to the bench “I’m Amy.  And you are?”

“I’m busy and don’t have time for this now,” his said tersely in a British accent.  I couldn’t believe my ears.  How rude.  And if he was so busy, why did he bother coming to the party anyway?  He turned towards me, and right after being taken aback by his perfect green eyes, I noticed an iPhone pressed up against his ear.

All at once I realized how foolish I was–he hadn’t been talking to me at all.  He’d been so quiet earlier, and through the noise of the party, I hadn’t noticed that he was obviously in a deep conversation.  How many of those wine thingies had I had?  Who knew, but it must have been a lot more than usual. I had better be careful as I was coming to realize that maybe, just maybe I was a little bit trashed.

He looked up at me slowly and held one finger to keep me at bay, the way you would gesture to an errant assistant when interrupted. Ew. No thank you. “What am I, one of your subjects?” I murmured.

He turned toward me, obviously hearing the snarky remark I’d just made.

“Hang on Jason,” he put his hand over the phone.  “No, you’re not, but you could be,” he said, an incorrigible grin on his face.  What a condescending ass.

Now I wished I hadn’t wandered over. Sure he was good looking–well actually he was gorgeous–but I wasn’t going to wait for someone I didn’t even know, no matter how well-built he was or how sexy his accent. But as I was about to turn and walk away, he ended his call and looked up at me, straight in my eyes.  It was a sweet look, nothing like how he had sounded a moment earlier, like we were in on some private joke together. I could feel heat spreading through my chest, and I almost felt like giggling. The way his eyes sparkled, it felt like he already knew me.

Blind Obsession by Ella Frank

SynopsisBlind Obsession

Obsession, defined as the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image or desire….

Chantel Rosenberg’s passion for music and life had never shone brighter than the time she spent in Bordeaux France. It’s a time when feelings arose and desires ran deep, a time that fundamentally changed her life.

A man living in seclusion, Phillipe Tibideau is haunted and plagued by memories he cannot disregard. Choosing to live a quiet life in his Chateau surrounded by the vineyards of France, he’s left his passion for art behind.

However, the time has arrived to tell his side of a tale. A tale that has depicted him as a ‘beautiful monster’ and he’s finally allowing someone close.

Close enough to ask questions. Questions he’s not sure he wants to answer. Questions about her.

For up and coming journalist Gemma Harris, the pursuit of truth is what drives her and when a job of a lifetime presents itself there is nothing in the world that will stop her from taking it. Even if it does mean leaving her home for several months to stay at Chateau Tibideau, with him.

This is a story of what happens when three passionate lovers collide and the desire for truth, art and music merge.

Chateau Tibideau is a place full of unanswered questions, dark sinful desire and a beauty so hauntingly sad it will have you wondering how you will ever leave the same….

Book Review: Every Rose by Lynetta Halat

Book Review:

Every Rose by Lynetta Halat

17458004

4 stars

Michael Bang has loved Lorraina Dabney all her life. And he let her know it. Every day and with every opportunity he had. It took Lorraina a while but years after he professed his love for her, she realized that she was always his. This is where their story starts. When Lorraina reaches out to Michael as she returns home from school, they pick up where they left off.  For a few amazing months, they live the life they wished they had started out earlier. But both Michael and Lorraina’s pasts have charted a future on totally different paths. Now that they want a life together, they must both learn to live as the individuals they have become and embrace their differences as a couple.

I loved this book!  The soulful, sometimes intense Michael Bang is a character with depth and heart.  All throughout the book, there was a tinge of sadness that I couldn’t quite define. I know it was because of the reality that always seems to emerge when two lovers are such divergent individuals. Michael loved Lorraina with all his heart. She inspired him to become a better person, he saved her from her past.  Lynetta Halat has written such a moving story about love, loss and redemption. Her writing is fluent and evocative. There is feeling in every page of the book, elation and sadness and hope. When I first picked up the book, I didn’t expect to get emotionally attached to the characters. I guess I found out the hard way towards the end of the story when I had an unexpected response to its plot.  I wanted more time with Lorraina and Michael and wished that the author had explored their relationship a little bit more before the story had to end.

Every Rose is a touching account of a girl and a boy and the love that they shared over the years. It is a testament to how people can change for the better because of love. It is also symbolic of pain and suffering and the significance of compassion and forgiveness.  Lynetta Halat’s  debut novel is a love story in a real world with real people.  What a pleasant surprise this book turned out to be!

I am not a writer, just a reader. I am a lover of love and indie authors. I don’t get overly excited about wrong comma placement or fragmented sentences, because I can barely construct one myself. I just know what makes me happy when I read and like to share when I find a good book!

I like a good love story, from the sweet to the scandalous, if there is a happily ever after in it, I am all over it.

Binds by Rebecca Espinoza

4.5 Stars!

Ophelia Brands is in a bind and she doesn’t even know it. Literally. Trapped in a loveless marriage and in search of her self- identity, she is kidnapped one day by a revolutionary group that seems to think they have all her answers.  First she finds out she is a Mage. Next, she herself is under a Bind imposed on her by her husband to curtail her powers.  Sad and alone since the day her mother was murdered, Ophelia doesn’t know what to think of these new revelations.  When given the choice of fighting for her people or returning to her old life, Ophelia knows that she will never ever give the second option a single thought. With her new-found people as well as the attention of two very protective and attractive rebels – Reece and Spencer, Ophelia must decide what her future will be.  This means going up against the most powerful Oberon who is also her father in law. As Ophelia learns more and more about her husband and the evil deeds of Oberon, she knows that she must stay with this group and help fight for the rights of the Mages.

This book was such a wonderful and surprising read for me. I have never read such a unique and unusual story.  Rebecca Espinoza’s writing is so eloquent that there was never a point of confusion for me despite the many levels present in the story. Her descriptions are vivid enough that her characters become realistic and compelling.  Rebecca Espinoza brilliantly wove many allusions to a foreboding that kept me engaged throughout the book. I wanted to find out who Reece and Spencer really are. Why did they go through all the trouble to watch her two years before deciding that it was time to take her? Were the Binds imposed on Ophelia the real reasons behind her acceptance of the falsehoods in her life or was she blinded by being too focused on her unhappy existence? Either way, the causes championed by her new “friends” have given her the inspiration and strength to revert to the woman she once was, with or without her magical powers. At the end of the book there is such an unexpected twist that makes me want to beg the author to hurry up and publish Book 2.

Binds is a story about fairies and magic and supernatural powers.  It is a story about the inherent presence of greed and the love for power in human nature . But most of all, it is a story about the love of a child for her mother, the absolute capacity of the heart to do good and the ever-present search for justice and equality among all of existence, humans and non humans alike. Rebecca Espinoza has done a fantastic job of combining mystery with magic and even a touch of romance. I can’t wait to read more from this refreshingly exceptional new author.

Reckless Abandon by Andrea Randall

ANDREA BLOG BANNER

Book Excerpt:

Before he can respond, the bartender takes the stage and announces Bo. My fingers tingle and I feel slightly dizzy. I notice that Rae is staring at me and am thankful that Regan isn’t. I tilt my chin to the stage to somehow reassure her that everything’s fine. Bo comes out wearing black jeans and a green t-shirt. The green t-shirt he told me reminded him of my eyes. I swallow hard as he sits on the stool and, without saying a word, starts strumming.

Every feeling from the first night I heard him play flies through me like a drunken seagull. I take several deep breaths as he makes his way through his original work, praying that what I’m feeling isn’t regret. The strings, his fingers, the warm bourbon tone kissing the microphone; they’re all lulling me into his presence, his being.

4.5 Stars

When Ten Days of Perfect ends, Ember is distraught about finding out Bo’s involvement in an incident that happened earlier on in the story. She turns to Adrian for comfort and tries to convince herself that what she had with Bo was merely a passing fling. She tries to take stock of her feelings and navigates through her rekindled relationship with Adrian while working for the same not for profit chaired by Bo. This doesn’t work so well – it doesn’t take much for her to realize that she is still in love with him. Their relationship takes many twists and turns as they both try to move on from each other. And then it happens: an unimaginable tragedy that leaves them reeling from pain, anger and confusion. Bo and Ember must learn how to endure their heartbreak whether separately or as a couple.

I’m going to mention up front that this has been one of the best books I have read in 2013 (with TLS of course). I read this book first as a Beta for Andrea and then twice more as the versions were being finalized and finally published. The emotions evoked in me by her writing have not changed between the first and last times I have read this book. Reckless Abandon is Andrea Randall’s break out work. There is so much more feeling, intensity, pain and love that have been rolled up into such a wonderful conclusion to Ten Days of Perfect.

There are a host of reasons for the effect that this book had on me. Andrea Randall has taken the characters to a whole new level.  It is a coming of age story in which the characters are catapulted into the depths of despair as we wait with bated breath to see how they survive. Bo and Ember cease to become perfect in the reader’s eyes. They are flawed and fallible, they thrash and flinch from their grief, they react in undignified ways. The cast of characters from Book 1 are back, and they each provide different layers to Bo and Ember’s story.  The author also takes her time to develop each character’s personal healing process and the consequences of each one’s actions. Oftentimes, misfortunes can either make or break a couple and Bo and Ember are not immune to the outcome that this heartbreak has on their bond.  Their agony is so heart wrenching and at times hard to swallow, but it gave them substance and integrity. It made them feel real in my eyes.  Andrea Randall also has an extreme talent for writing songs and poetry. The story is so full of these sweet words and verses one can’t help but feel these expressions as if they are leaping out of the book and into your heart. And the romantic scenes between Bo and Ember – they are electrifying, sizzling, achingly tender and romantic.   Andrea Randall’s words drown you with a sorrow so intense, it makes you fear that each time they are together may be their last.

As I stood with a  group of people getting ready to go to dinner the night before the Chicago Author Event last September, I realized I was standing right next to Andrea Randall. I saw a shy, quiet lady who had just published her first book. I turned to her and said, “hey, you’re Andrea Randall. I loved Ten Days of Perfect and Bo.” She has called me her First Bo Fan ever since. And she might still be shy (although not after you get to know her) but she is certainly no longer a new  and emerging author. Andrea Randall has come into her own. With her words, with her characters and with her writing. Congratulations, Andrea Randall!

About the Author:

I started writing poetry long before writing fiction. I firmly believe Poetry is a solid foundation for all other forms of writing. It taught me that a single word can make or break the world.

I write fiction because my characters have a story and they want me to tell it.

I hope you enjoy the pieces of my soul that I share with you.
